Week 3 Written Opinion – Era: 1986-1994

Personal Computers also became a contender for the gaming market during this time.

What made PCs a popular choice for gamers over the typical consoles?

In the early 1990s, Sega and Nintendo discovered they had a new opponent entering the market.  The PC had began to take take over the new generation of video  game manufacturers, as the Era of Multimedia began. As sound was becoming more common in PCs, Roland and Turtle Beach were manufacturing sound cards that could handle audio files. Early PCs came with built-in speakers, but they weren’t that great. In 1989, Creative Labs introduced a cheap sound card called “Sound Blaster.” The card came with input/output jacks, MIDI/joystick port, and a 11 voice FM synthesizer. The “Sound Blaster” also became the top selling add-on card in the market. The “Sound Blaster” became the standard of the industry and companies like Gravis and MediaVision began to release their own versions of Sound Blaster. In the book “The Ultimate History of Video Games,” it mentions that Macintosh computers were more suited for gaming because the monitors had a higher resolution than the PC monitors and PCs have more compatibility problems than Macintosh.

I think that the reason PCs were becoming more popular in the early 1990s was because of the rise of multimedia. Computers were becoming more advanced visually and under the hood. The specs we’re going up and the prices were going down. People could use the computers for many purposes including web surfing, gaming, and offline use. Consoles back then were only able to do one thing, which was to play games. We can still see a little bit of that today, but as technology is advancing, consoles and electronics are becoming more powerful and mobile. This is why we see games today coming out on more than one console. Not only does it produce more profit, but it allows the buyer a little more of a variety. For some of the more popular games, developers like to make them compatible with a select console. This may seem to limit the fan base a little bit, but in the end it may produce more profit for the consoles because players may purchase a console with a sole purpose to only play a specific game.

PC to Console…

Not too long ago, G4 had a posted some facts about an interview with the CEO of Blizzard, Mike Morhaime. Click here to read the article

To sum it up, they talked about how well Torchlight did when it was sent over to the console. They wanted  to have the option of making the game more accessible to people. And in my opinion, that also grants them more income. Personally i believe that this game should belong to only PC.  Blizzard loves money, just look at how World of Warcraft works. There are plenty of games out there for consoles, let us PC gamers have ours. To be a PC gamers, is to be part of a dying breed. People have to spend lots of money upgrading their computers to keep up with today’s hottest games. What do you think?
